About

Our History

The club was founded in 1968 by a group of local people who worked for the Avon Rubber Company.

The founders of the club decided to use the name “Kingston Archers” because of strong historical connections with the town.

The company was a major employer in the area at that time, and provided a sports ground for employees to use during their spare time.

The ground was large enough to be used as an archery field and it also had space for a building to store equipment when it was not in use.

The surrounding area was heavily involved in the woolen industry, with several woolen mills having been built within the town.

In later years these former mill buildings were used by the Avon Rubber Company for their operations.

One of the buildings was known as “Kingston Mill” and it was from there that the club got its name.

Avon rubber has now moved out of the town and the ground has been taken over by the National Playing Fields Association.

Kingston Archers, although becoming independent from Avon Rubber continued to use the site until July 2019, when we eventually moved to grounds adjoining Bradford on Avon rugby club in Winsley.
